To Whom It May Concern:

This is an invitation to apply for a Venture Grant. Our Venture Grants are designed to provide funding to a new, innovative program or organization. They are usually granted on a one-time basis with no commitment for continued support. The limit to the request is $2,500. Organizations do not need to be a United Way partner agency to qualify for a Venture Grant. The following criteria must be met to apply:

  • Be an incorporated, voluntary, not-for-profit charitable organization. Possess a tax-exempt status under Section 501 C3 from the US Internal Revenue Service. (Please attach a copy of the 501 C3 letter with your application.)

  • Provide a health or human care service.

  • Respond to an important need in the community not already met by an existing agency of United Way.

  • Provide services to people in Murray-Calloway County.

  • Be governed by an active policy-making body, including individuals on your board serving without compensation.

The original grant proposal should be submitted to United Way by Friday, September 29, 2017 at 4:00 PM, electronically, mailed, or in person.

What are Venture Grants?

Venture grants are time-limited grants for innovation. In most cases, when a venture grant is awarded, no commitment for continued support is made.

Venture grants have been used frequently by United Way organizations. These seed money grants are intended to provide short-term support for start-up, development, or stabilization of new or untried agencies or programs. Their purpose is to promote the improvement of health and human services through the addition of innovative agencies or programs to the United Way system.  However, any nonprofit can apply: applicants are not required to be a current or past United Way funded partner. Venture grants will be evaluated and processed separately from the regular United Way allocations review.

Venture grants are funded from a small fund that is set aside from the campaign.

Why Venture Grants?

Our United Way has found the venture grant program to be an effective donor investment strategy for several reasons;

  • Venture grants improve flexibility and ability to innovate. The venture grant program allows agencies to develop new projects to meet emerging needs without necessarily making a long-term commitment. Venture grants can also serve as the Research and Development arm of the donor investment process.


  • A venture grant program provides an opportunity to create new partnerships and collaborations between community agencies and United Way.  A venture grant might help a new agency strengthen its programs and develop partnerships that can evolve into long-term relationships with United Way.


  • Venture grants frequently provide agencies with valuable “start-up” money needed to support an innovative effort. With a small venture grant an agency can launch a new service initiative and test it without having to decrease an existing service that is important to the community.


  • A venture grant program can help foster improvement of a program’s effectiveness.  These grants can be used to evaluate the program’s effectiveness to determine if a new approach is needed to better serve the targeted population.




Venture Grant Program

  1. Eligibility:

An agency/organization must meet the following criteria to be eligible to submit a venture grant application.

  1. Agency/organization must be a 501 C3 non-profit human service agency with IRS Tax Exempt status.

  2. Agency/organization must provide health and human services within the Murray-Calloway Co. area.


  1. Ineligibility:

Agency related programs which have one of the following purposes as their primary mission are ineligible to submit a venture grant application:

  1. Cultural – teach, involve active participation in, or appreciation in, or appreciation of, the arts; as related to agencies and their programs

  2. Political – programs that influence public opinion, or local, state, or federal legislation; as related to agencies and their programs

  3. Religious – programs that promote a particular religious view or practice in agency activities.

  4. venture grant funds cannot be used to continue projects or programs previously operated and funded by other revenue sources.

  5. venture grant funds cannot be used to FUND SPECIAL EVENTS, SALARIES, STIPENdS OR RENT.  


  1. Funding Criteria:

The UWMCC Community Support Team (CST) of volunteers will evaluate applications beginning October 2, 2017, according to the following criteria:

  1. The ability of the agency to describe the size, depth, and impact of the community need and how its program or project addresses the described need.

Two types of needs have been identified as appropriate venture grant funding:

  1. Emerging needs - Needs previously unrecognized and/or unidentified; no services currently available.

  2. Community or neighborhood needs – Needs not being met by services currently available in the community.

  1. Potential for success if funded, as defined by the objectives of the project itself, and as indicated by the capabilities of the agency/organization.

  2. Potential for a positive impact upon identified service recipients, or community population.

  3. The relationship between the expected impact of the project and the amount of funding requested through the Venture Grant Program.

  4. The uniqueness of the approach and how the program or project is different from others addressing similar needs.

  5. The innovative, creative, and/or non-traditional characteristics of the project.

  6. The ability of the agency or project to attract or develop funds to continue the project after funding through the Venture Grant Program is terminated.

  7. Venture Grant recipients will be notified by December 1, 2017.

Venture Grant Project Reporting Schedule

The agency agrees to provide these reports according to the schedules defined in Parts I and II below.

Part I: Financial Statement Schedule

Regular Distribution of Funds:

The agency agrees to provide regular financial statements for the project to support the distribution of funds from their Venture Grant account, if requested to do so.

Part II: Program Reporting Schedule

The agency agrees to provide program reports documenting the achievement of the project throughout the funding period on a quarterly basis. These reports shall define the current status of the project’s measurable objectives and the project outcomes as attached. The reports also shall define the current status of efforts to secure continuation funding for the project after the termination of the Venture Grant funding.

Additionally, the agency agrees to provide a final report at the conclusion of the funding period. This report shall include a final financial report, Attachment B, (total revenues and expenditures associated with the project), a final project report documenting outcomes and achievements of measurable objectives, and a final status report regarding continuation funding for the project.
